Academic Treatment of Hinduism – California Department of Education

California’s official educational standards states:

“No religious belief or practice may be held up to ridicule and no religious group may be portrayed as inferior… Textbooks should instill a sense of pride in every child in his or her heritage.”

As the previously mentioned text shows, the text books are not in compliance with these educational standards. A small victory has been won, in that the name, “India,” in the text was not stripped out and replaced with the term “South Asia.” More work must be done to ensure fair and accurate representations of Hinduism in text books across America, not just in California, but also wherever Hinduism is misportrayed in books.
